Third Eagle Scout Project at Eagle Slough Natural Area

The Vanderburgh County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) was pleased to endorse the Eagle Scout project proposed by Jonathon Felton for the Eagle Slough Natural Area (ESNA).  ESNA has already been the beneficiary of two previous Eagle Scout projects by Cody Weidner and Ben Rupert.  Both projects have advanced our mission of wetlands conservation and education.

Jonathon proposed to clear fallen trees, brush, and trash to create an extension of the existing trail at ESNA.  The extension, called the Beaver Point Trail, will double the length of our trails system and will expose the hiker to our lakes and lowland areas.   Much of the ESNA wildlife can only be seen from these vantage points, especially the activity of our resident beaver population.

Jonathon also proposed to build 6 wood duck houses, 2 woodpecker houses, and 2 single colony bat boxes. and install them in the ESNA.  The wood for the habitats was graciously donated by Tim Griffith (Wild Birds Unlimited) and wildlife expert. Mr. Griffith was also very helpful in aiding Jonathon as to what type of habitats should be built.  Thanks to the many volunteers of time and materials, Jonathon’s Eagle Project was a success and an asset for the Eagle Slough Natural Area.

Eagle Slough Natural Area is a haven for birds, both year-round residents and migratory song birds and waterfowl.  Over 150 species have already been identified at Eagle Slough.  These houses will foster the populations of ducks, bats, and woodpeckers.

Jonathon's project was finished in time for the Ohio Valley Birding Festival.  The Vanderburgh County SWCD wants to Thank you Jonathon.
